To be or not to be number 1

The Economist (April 12 2007):

Economic competition is not a zero-sum game. China’s economy will overtake America’s not because United States is in internal decline, but because China is catching up. And faster growth in China and other emerging economies will benefit America, not harm it. It is better to be number two in a fast growing world, than number one in a stagnant one.
